Radical Fashion Tips from the 80’s

1. The Cure
Tips from the creators of the genre Gothic Rock have very simple guidelines: black (and lots of it) accompanied with long messy/unkempt hair (preferably dyed black).

2. Madonna
This pic has all the information you need. Madonna inspired a new fashion trend for little girls and women everywhere defined by lace tops, skirts over capri pants, fishnet stalkings and tons of jewelry with the Christian cross.

3. Crockett & Tubbs (Don Johnson & Philip Michael Thomas)
There’s no doubt that the Miami Vice series sparked a huge fashion trend for men in the 80’s. Italian fashion, meet America. The typical line-up generally consisted of an Italian sportcoat, T-shirt, white linen pants and slip-on shoes. The average colors ranged from several shade of pinks, peach, blue, green and fuschia. Oh yeah, and don’t forget to sport the Don Johnson 5 o’clock shadow otherwise know as “designer stubble” at all times.

4. Poison
One of the bands to start the “Big Hair” trend (with an honorable mention to White Snake…it was a close call), Poison has been around for a long time and from the looks of things, are trying to hang on to hang on (if not, bring back) the long/big hair trend.

5. “The Carlton”
Alright, so it’s not a celeb’s pic, but let’s be honest…how many times did you NOT see The Fresh Prince’s character, Carlton, wearing something similar to this?! The “Preppy” is a simple outfit: Short-sleeve, bright colored polo shirt, a pair of high-shorts (above the knee…considerably) and a bright colored sweater tied in front. This seems to really attract the ladies…anyone ever see “Trading Places” with Eddied Murphy & Dan Aykroyd? I rest my case!

6. Legwarmers
They were on Footloose. Enough said.
Optional (VERY Optional)

7. Hammer Pants
Who could forget the icon, MC Hammer. Although he was really the only person to actually sport the look, he kept with it…even with some hate from LL Cool J (who looks gay without a hat anyway) and other rappers. Maybe his pants weren’t the biggest fashion trends, but I know (and this sadly includes myself) boys and men everywhere were buzzing those lines in the side of their hair!!

This is a good overview of 80s fashion. 80s music and movies were tied very closely to 1980s fashion trends
